As you get older, some of your teeth might fall out. It's nothing to be ashamed of, it is simply something that happens as part of the ageing process. With that said, this doesn't mean that you need to live with gaps where your teeth should be. You can still have a winning smile in your senior years with a little help from cosmetic dentistry. The choice that many seniors have to make is whether to opt for dentures or for dental implants. While dentures are something that can be inserted into and removed from your mouth, dental implants are something permanently fixed. So what would be the advantages of investing in dental implants over dentures?

Better speech. With dentures, some people find themselves slipping and slurring over words because of the movement of the dentures inside their mouth. Dentures are not something fixed and rooted and this means that some slippage can occur. When you are trying to get your tongue around long words, this can sometimes be a problem, but as dental implants are totally fixed, this is a non-issue.

Less soreness. There is another issue that can arise from the movement of dental implants, and that is soreness. Imagine dentures slipping inside your mouth and over sensitive areas such as the gums. Sometimes this can even cause bleeding, but again, because dental implants are fixed and rooted into the mouth, there should be no movement and no soreness.

Less risk of allergy. Some people have dentures made and only discover afterwards that they are allergic to the materials that dentures are made from. This can cause many unpleasant sensations such as a burning feeling within the mouth, experiencing a sour taste, and accumulation of bacteria on the tongue. People who experience these allergies are usually allergic to the colour pigments used within resins and plastics. Dental implants, however, are typically made from titanium, which is generally far more bio-acceptable.

Improved durability. Many people are put off by the cost of dental implants. The initial investment is certainly more than for dentures. It's important to remember, however, that dental implants will last for much longer – maybe even until the rest of your life. Dentures, on the other hand, will need to be replaced around every five years. If a person doesn't update their dentures, they could become discoloured, could become odorous, and could even cause pain and health problems.
